On May 23rd Prestbury URC celebrated its 140th Birthday with a weekend of events. The church was opened as a Congregational Chapel in 1866 to provide an alternative centre of worship in the village.
The foundation stone was laid in November 1865 by Mr H.O Wills of the Bristol tobacco firm, who was himself a fervent Congregationalist.
On the Saturday we had a social at the WI Hall with tea and country dancing and on the Sunday there was a special service where Mr Vic James cut the birthday cake. Vic's father Ron cut the cake at the 100th Birthday Celebration. At Urchins on the Monday, our youngest child Henry Pauley and his mother Sue cut another cake. The celebrations were rounded off by a lunch at the Kings Arms and a History evening at the Church where an exhibition of some of our records stored at the Recods Office were shown and memories shared.
Our thanks go to Julie Jefferies and the organising Committee for this event.
