United Reformed Church in Cheltenham
Induction of Maz Allen

The Induction of the Revd Maz Allen into the Pastorate of the United Reformed Church in Cheltenham took place on Sunday January 28th 2007.  The service was held at  St Andrews and was led by the Moderator of the West Midlands Synod (Revd Elizabeth Welch).  Others taking part were the Revd John Johansen-Berg (Interim Moderator for the URCiC), Revd Heather Whyte (President of the Gloucester District of the URC) and the Revd. Stephen Wilkins of Bitterne Park & Pear Tree Green URC (Guest Preacher).

At the start of the service the procession of the clergy and district council members was led by Craig Boggon carrying a bible. The music for the service was provided by the St Andrews Organist, Peter Meason, and a  group made up of musicians from the URCiC and St Christopher’s.  The bible readings were by  Richard Hall and Carole Pennington.

During the service there were statements from David Brown (District), Brian Miles (Vacancy Committee) and Maz herself on how she came to be called to Cheltenham . Towards the end of the service, representatives from the three churches of the URCiC, St Christopher’s, Gloucester District of the URC,  other denominations and the mayor formally welcomed Maz to Cheltenham .

A gift of a ‘Family Apple Tree’ (a tree with 3 types of apple growing on one rootstock) was presented by Ann Lewis, United Church Secretary, symbolizing the three churches growing as one. On a lighter note, Maz was also presented with a pack of 'three-in-one' dishwasher powder - hoping for a brilliant finish!

The Church was full with members of the three congregations, Maz’ friends and family, and a 50 strong contingent of members of the congregation at Chandler ’s Ford.  Guests include the Mayor, Mrs Jacky Fletcher; representatives from St Christopher's, the Church of England, the Roman Catholic Church, the Baptist Church , the Methodist Church and the Congregational Church and also members from other URC churches in Gloucestershire and the West Midlands . The MP for Cheltenham, Martin Horwood , attended the tea afterwards with his children.
