Fifteen exhibitors displayed their wares at a ‘Health and Well Being Event for Older People and Carers’ held at St Andrew’s URC Cheltenham in July. The event was organised by the Church in conjunction with the local Primary Health Care Trust and Social Services. There was advice on healthy eating from Community and District Nurses, weight and blood pressure checks, foot care, information on preventing falls and Wiltshire Farm Foods gave out menus of their pre-prepared meals which they deliver to the door. We did not forget the exercise and offered ‘Tai Chi’ taster sessions in the Church which proved very popular.
For those in their own homes, information was available from the Fire Service, Care & Repair, Lifetime Homes Team and Severn Wye Energy Agency who were giving away tank insulation jackets and long life bulbs. Age Concern arrived with a lap top giving advice on using the Internet and information was also on hand from Patient Advice and Liaison Service, Carers Gloucestershire, Guide Information Service with NHFA providing financial advice on obtaining and funding long-term care.
Over 100 people visited the mini-fair and a comment from one Exhibitor was ‘the best event they had attended to date’; which sets down a challenge to the Church for the next one.
